Flatbed, Self-Titled: Good Stuff by Kevin Hosey www.buffaloroots.blogspot.com and www.buffaloroots.com Flatbed appears to have stuck to the basics on their debut, self-titled CD (Flatbedmusic), and I for one am glad they did; this is a really good CD. Made up of Derek Bassett on vocals and guitar, Daniel Smith on guitar, Michael Tinsmon on bass, Joelle Labert on vocals (and tambourine), Ted Chubbuck Jr. on drums and John F. Brady on mandolin, dobro and vocals, Flatbed has incorporated a few more sounds to its roots rock sound, with more country and even jam and old-timey music coming to the forefront. The CD opens with "40 Miles," fast, chugging country rock with Labert singing of lost love and hope and her eventual broken heart. Her living in the country separates her from most people, her friends and the man she loves, and she takes to drinking away her problems, to no avail. Smith plays a nice, short solo. "Ride" is a jangly rocker of a relationship not working out; Bassett likes or loves her, but he loves the road more and his motorcycle is calling; Smith's solo is a bit punchier. Labert's other songs feature her fine voice; "To Sea," a quieter, mostly acoustic song, has Joelle missing and praying for her man, who has gone to sea; "Roulette" is an upbeat two-stepper where she admires a Texan on the dance floor, apparently hoping he has moves elsewhere as well. Nathan Montague adds a fun harmonica solo. Labert really steps out on two less country/rock tunes: the bluesy "Liver and Kidneys" is a great, slow jazzy/bluesy song where Joelle just wants to stay in for one night, knowing that if she goes out she'll be drinking and who knows what else, leaving her body sore again. Tinsmon adds some nice, smooth bass. "Big Winds Blow" is a cool old-timey song with touches of jazz and country (Bill Brandau's piano adds some magic); Labert sounds great as she seems to be watching life go by, as if she is recovering from the end of a relationship or hangover, possibly both. Bassett also sings on two lighter country rockers, "Lame Excuse," with a touch of southern rock, and "Lonely Dispatch," the tale of a rural vehicle dispatcher. The Buffalo News: GUSTO May 11th, 2007 Since emerging three years back as an acoustic trio anchored around the vocals of Joelle Labert, fleshed out by the guitars of Derek Bassett and the engine-room rumblings of bassist Michael Tinsmon, Buffalo's Flatbed has evolved into a full-blown celebration of Americana and roots-rock. The band's self-titled debut reveals an instantly likable, home-brewed, country-based collection of songs splitting the difference between the 'Cosmic American Music' of Gram Parsons and New Riders of the Purple Sage and the folk-based country of Emmylou Harris. In mandolin/dobro man John F. Brady, drummer Ted Chubbuck Jr. and Telecaster 'chicken-picker' Daniel Smith, the Bassett-Labert-Tinsmon core has found an eminently talented tribe of like-minded players to solidify the Flatbed sound. The result is the finest roots-rock collective to emerge from our neck of the woods since the wonderful Steam Donkeys first started kicking in the stalls. The band features one of Western New York's most versatile and beautiful voices in Joelle Labert and some mighty fine players themselves with Derek Bassett-guitar/vocals, John Brady-mandolin/dobro, Ted Chubbuck Jr.-drums, Daniel Smith-guitars and Michael Tinsmon-bass. On their new nine song CD they put on their traveling shoes for the lead off track "40 Miles", add some tasty guitar licks on "Ride", do the two step on "Roulette", add a jazzy swagger to "Liver & Kidneys" and take you home on "Big Winds Blow". With a little Flying Burrito Brothers, a little Grateful Dead, some Emmylou Harris and following their muse Flatbed is an enjoyable listen.

Rootstime (Belgium): -SEPTEMBER2.htm Een country band, dat is Flatbed uit upstate New York; Buffalo om precies te zijn, zo genoemd naar de pionierskarren uit de periode van de verovering van het wilde westen. Een zesmansformatie die een soort country brengt die verwant is met de folky country à la Emmylou Harris, maar ook met sound van de New Riders of The Purple Sage en Gram Parsons, wat men de "Cosmic American music" noemde en wat men nu Americana noemt. Flatbed was eerst 't trio onder leiding van Joelle Labert, zangeres en singer-songwriter/gitarist, zanger en songwriter Derek Bassett, en bassist Michael Timson. Toen de optredens begonnen te komen wilden de jongens wat meer diversiteit in hun sound en werd de bezetting uitgebreid, ze wilden een echte leadgitarist erbij en dat werd een vriend van Joelle en Derek, Daniel Smit. Zonder drummer ging het natuurlijk dan ook niet meer en Ted Chubbuck Jr kwam erbij, en wat later kwam multi-instrumentalist John F. Brady hun nog vervoegen met mandoline en lap steel. Het geheel was nu een volle sound met alle mogelijkheden voor verschillende country stijlen. Nu, na drie jaar intensief optreden is hun debuut er, en omdat we al genoeg namen genoemd hebben, kunnen we enkel nog vermelden dat ze nog extra hulp kregen op harmonica, orgel en piano. Volgens persberichten hebben ze een grote fanbasis en zijn hun optredens zeer de moeite waard, dit zou kunnen, want enkel op basis van hun live reputatie, zonder deze CD kregen ze reeds een nominatie voor Best Americana band in 2005 en 2006, nu met deze cd als ruggesteun hopen ze die prijs ook in de wacht te slepen. Die kans zit er in want er staan wel een aantal sterke songs op deze cd. "40 Miles" is er al zo eentje, het openingsnummer van deze cd. Een travelling song met een beetje een Johnny Cash achtige treinritme.Vocaal zijn de sterkste nummers degene waar Joelle de zang voor haar rekening neemt, niet dat ze zo een fantastische zangeres is, maar haar stem brengt de sfeer goed over die in de songs zit. Gelukkig zingt zij het merendeel. "To Sea" is bijvoorbeeld zo'n goeie song. Of "Roulette", weer een song waar wat Johnny Cash-ritme in verscholen zit, een goede song waarin iedereen zo wat op instrumentaal gebied kan uitblinken, zowel mondharmonica, gitaar als mandoline. "Liver And Kidneys" heeft zelfs wat bluesinvloeden. "Big Winds Blow" is een langzame western swing, die me sterk herinnert aan het werk van Toni Price. Hoe zou het met Toni zijn by the way, lang niks meer van gehoord. Wat korte cd, negen niet al te lange songs, maar voor een debuut toch al een belofte voor de toekomst. Nu die award nog winnen...
